Syed Manzur Elahi appointed FBCCI administrator

Former adviser Syed Manzur Elahi has been appointed as the administrator of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) for a period of 120 days to oversee its activities and facilitate holding elections.
The Ministry of Commerce Thursday gave the appointment as the tenure of the executive committee of the FBCCI expired Thursday.
"He'll administer the day-to-day affairs of the FBCCI and take necessary measures to conduct the FBCCI election within the stipulated timeframe as per regulation," according to a commerce ministry notification.
Talking to reporters at his Apex Group office, Manzur Elahi said he would make efforts to hold the FBCCI election within 90 days.
"The election will be held as per the rules of the apex trade body. The existing voter list will be reviewed," he said. Elahi is expected to take charge of the FBCCI formally from Sunday.
Meanwhile, High Court (HC) in its verdict Thursday restored the rights to franchise of five voters of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). The executive committee dropped the BGMEA voters from the final FBCCI voter list, alleging that they were not elected legally.
The FBCCI election, which was due on August 16, remained suspended following a stay order by the HC when BGMEA leaders filed a writ petition in the HC after the names of BGMEA representatives were excluded from the voter list. Following the development the government extended the tenure of the existing FBCCI executive body twice, up to December 6.
Talking to the FE outgoing FBCCI president Mir Nasir Hossain said: "I welcome him (Elahi) as an administrator of the federation. He is a prominent person in the country."
"We are ready to hand over the charge to the administrator as our job has ended," he said adding that they would follow the directives of the court and the government.
The office bearers of the FBCCI, led by Mir Nasir, and the directors were elected uncontested in August 2005.
A renowned industrialist, Syed Manzur Elahi, took his MA in Economics in 1964 from the Dhaka University. He was a director of International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICCB) and ex-president of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).
