Syedpur rly workshop being uplifted

Our Correspondent NILPHAMARI, Nov 26: Modernisation of Syedpur Railway workshop started on an expenditure of Tk 1220 million and installation of machineries and improvement of infrastructure is going on. The workshop is also preparing to build 30 new passenger carriages there. Sources said total construction cost of these 30 carriages would be around Tk 150 million whereas if imported the price of the same would be approximately Tk 1000 million. Earlier the government decided to repair old and damaged passenger carriages and in two installments 122 old and damaged passenger carriages ware repaired before Eid-ul Azha. Sources said the workshop was established in 1870 on 111 hectares of land has 27 shops or sections. In the past there were 10,000 workers and employees in the workshop which later came down to 1800 that created manpower shortage. To overcome the situation round the clock work is going on and the option of part time work has been introduced.
