SYLHET, Oct 12: The construction of the much-awaited Sylhet Central Bus Terminal in the city's Kadamtali is complete and waiting for its inauguration, said an official of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC).
SCC Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman said, "The project delayed for a long time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, we are now ready for opening."
The delay cost immense suffering for pedestrians, school-goers, and passengers of inter-district buses, and other vehicles plying the roads of the area for more than two years.
The World Bank-aided project, built on an area of 7.5 acres of land, is now complete. And it is called one of the most modern and beautiful bus terminals in the country.
Designed by a group of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) architects, the terminal is built with a blend of tradition and modernity.
It is said that all contemporary amenities can be found here. There are separate entrances and exits like an airport. The five-storey building has a huge waiting lounge with about 1500 seats for passengers with 30 VIP seating arrangements.
It also houses a terminal management office, an auditorium for meeting, a monitoring cell, a room for police officers, and a tourism office. A multipurpose welfare centre has also been set up on the terminal for the transport workers. Drivers and other transport workers will be able to take rest in 24 rooms.
After its inauguration, the terminal will have a total of 30 ticket counters and a prayer room, a breastfeeding corner, etc.
However, the terminal does not seem to have any place where passengers can lodge their complaints. There is also no arrangement for cleaning the terminal area.
It is mentioned that over a thousand buses start from the bus terminal everyday to various destinations in the region as well as to the capital and other districts including North-Bengal. Established on an area of 7.5 acres of land in the South Surma area, the central bus terminal plays a key role in the region's road communication with the rest of the country.
