Sylhet city works being hampered for lack of supervision

SYLHET, July 18: Routine development works of the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) area are being hampered due to lack of timely supervision by the incumbent mayor as he mostly remains off doing party politics.
SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury will serve for only three and a half months as Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, the mayor-elect, is scheduled to assume office on November 07.
In such a situation, it seems that there is none to carry out responsibilities effectively in the development works of the corporation.
As an outgoing mayor, Ariful does not have much attention on the development works of the local government body and he is spending much time in his political activities.
On the other hand, mayor-elect Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury is also busy participating in various social and political events.
Taking the advantage of lax monitoring, occupying footpaths of the city streets, vendors are selling various items, hindering smooth movement of the commuters and vehicles.
The vendors are mostly seen occupying pavements in the busy areas like Bandarbazar, Chouhatta and Surma Market.
The areas like Pulermukh, Court Point, Ambarkhana, Zindabazar, Madina Market, Rikabibazar, Medical Road, Shibganj, Mirabazar are also menaced by the vendors.
The problem becomes more acute in the evening when vendors occupy a large portion of the roads.
But the hope is that on several occasions, Mayor-elect Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has made promises to transform Sylhet into a smart and well-planned city.
