T20 World Cup kicks off in style

The fifth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup kicked off in the city as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday evening formally opened the gala event seeking cooperation of all in making the tournament a grand success. “I seek cooperation of all, including the youth, in brightening the country’s image further by making the T20 World Cup a grand success,” she said. The Prime Minister, also the chief patron of the meet, declared the tournament open from a decorated dais set up on the VVIP Pavilion on the southwest side of the Bangabandhu National Stadium here in the evening. In her brief speech, Sheikh Hasina said the latest version of cricket has infused dynamism into this popular game by making it more exciting and enthralling the youth. She hoped that this World Cup event would remain in memories of people for a long time as a symbol of spectacular performances by world-class cricketers, according to a news agency.
