Tabani to market soft drinks in PET bottles

The state-owned Tabani Beverage Company Ltd. has taken a move to market its soft drink products in plastic PET bottles replacing the traditional glass bottles for convenience of consumers, officials said Monday.
The company would set up a plant for packaging its soft-drink in PET (poly-ethylene tetra) bottle by June next year, a company official told the FE.
The government's highest authority on development projects is likely to approve the scheme today (Tuesday).
The official of the company said they would utilise a soft-drinks production plant in capital's Mirpur area where the products would be bottled in different sizes.
The production capacity of the proposed unit will be 125 BPM (bottle per minute). At present Tabani Beverage bottles global brand Coca-Cola non-alcoholic soft drinks in 250ml glass bottle for the local market.
"Since the consumers face difficulties in returning the glass bottle to the shops after consuming the beverages, we have taken the move to bottle the soft-drinks in PET bottles for their convenience," he told the FE.
"We are expecting to take back the major market share of the soft-drink in the country again if we can replace our new plant with the old one," the official said.
A total of Tk295.58 million would be required to set up the PET bottle unit.
Tabani Beverage Company Ltd, run by the Bangladesh Freedom Fighters Welfare Trust under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, bottle the world's famous brand Coke and market those in the country.
The company has acquired the authority of bottling the global brand Coca-Cola's Coke-brand soft drink in early 60s and have marketing authority in the country's Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions.
Abdul Monem Ltd, also has the licence to produce and market Coca Cola in the rest of the country.
Business insiders said the market size of the non-alcoholic beverage in Bangladesh is about Tk15-20 billion.
Besides Coca Cola other dominant market players in the country are Pepsi, RC Cola, newcomer Akij and Pran.
Nearly 5000 manpower including 478 skilled are directly involved with the production and marketing of Coke produced by Tabani Beverage Company Ltd in the country.
