TAC completes hearing of 432 applicants

The Truth and Accountability Commission (TAC) has already completed hearing most of 491 applicants who applied for clemency in return for their ill-gotten wealth to escape punishment under the now-ebbing anti-corruption purge launched by the interim regime after the January 11, 2007 changeover, reports UNB.
As of Wednesday, the three-member Commission headed by Justice Habibur Rahman Khan, heard clemency pleas of 432 corrupt individuals, including nine on the day.
According to information made available by TAC, since September 1 until Tuesday, a total of 432 individuals have been heard and they pledged to pay Tk 341.6 million to the exchequer to buy the mercy.
An amount of Tk 211.5 million had already been deposited with government treasury by 253 individuals.
Mercy certificates had already been distributed to 145 persons while another 55 certificates are ready to be distributed.
Of the 491 clemency applicants, there are 2 politicians, 29 businessmen, 369 government servants, wives of 53 of them and 38 belonging to other professions.
Among the applicants, 22 have applied directly, 289 through the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC), 167 through the National Coordination Committee (NCC) on serious crime and corruption and 13 through courts.
