Tafazzul Islam made chief justice

President Zillur Rahman on Tuesday appointed justice Mohammad Tafazzul Islam the chief justice. The president made the appointment in line with article 95 (1) of the constitution. Justice Islam, who replaces justice M M Ruhul Amin, will take office on Dec 23. He is currently a judge in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Justice Amin goes into retirement on December 22. Islam was born on February 8, 1943 in Comilla. He was appointed an additional justice of the High Court (HC) on February 10, 1994. He was made permanent justice of the HC on Feb 8, 1996. Justice Islam was appointed an Appellate Division justice on Aug 27, 2003. His tenure as the chief justice expires on Feb 7, 2010. Justice Islam had headed the special appellate division bench formed for the final verdict of the Bangabandhu murder case. — bdnews24.com
