Taiwan-Bangla trade volume reaches $ 234m
FE Report | Tuesday, 8 July 2008
Bilateral trade between Taiwan and Bangladesh in the first five months of this year reached 234 million US dollars, rising 17.46 per cent from the corresponding period last year.
Optimistic about further improvement in bilateral trade, a number of Taiwanese business people and institutions are stepping up efforts to expand their business in the Bangladeshi market.
Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), which is working to strengthen trade relationship between Bangladesh and Taiwan, is taking the lead in this connection. It has recently been commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) of Taiwan to lead a trade mission in Bangladesh.
The 2008 Taiwan Trade Mission to Bangladesh is comprised of 16 companies from industries as diverse as machinery, auto parts, mould making, aquaculture, plastic, garments, hardware and medical products.
The group will hold business meetings in the city tomorrow (Wednesday) and at the Hotel Agrabad in Chittagong on July 12.
Local businessmen have been invited to join the meetings and to explore new business opportunities. These events will allow the delegates to set up links with potential distributors and buyers and to expand into the local market.
Among the delegates, Aegeson Corporation intends to outsource motorcycle jackets and trousers from local manufacturers, while Hai-Yu Enterprise will offer turnkey aquaculture plant and technology to would-be local partners.
One seminar will be held after the trade meeting at the same venue. The subject of the seminar is 'The most profitable technology of shrimp culture"
Participating companies are drawn to Bangladesh's vast domestic market with an expanding middle-class sector and an average annual growth rate of 5.0 per cent since 1990.
The Taiwanese business circle has given Bangladesh a second look following Goldman Sachs' assessment of Bangladesh in December 2005.
The noted financial advising group predicted that Bangladesh would be one of the 'Next Eleven' emerging markets, along with Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan and seven other countries.
