Take highest cautionary measures to stop further emergence of terrorists

Sunday, 21 December 2008

BARISAL, Dec 20 (UNB): Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Saturday asked field-level government officials to take highest cautionary measures to check further emergence of terrorists taking the opportunity of the complete withdrawal of the state of emergency.
He also directed them to remain active round the clock to deter any possible ill attempt of banned organisations and evil forces before the general election.
The CA said that his caretaker government, which carried out painstaking politico-electoral reforms in the interim period, would certainly present the nation a free, fair and acceptable election on December 29.
In achieving this end "there is no room to show any kind of bias towards anybody and bow to any kind of influence or pressure", he said in his strict pre-election instructions for all tiers of the administration.
The CA made the directive during an opinion-exchange meeting with the government officials of Barisal Division in the district circuit-house conference room in the afternoon as part of preparatory steps ahead of the incoming parliamentary elections.
This was the 4th of such meeting after the first one in Khulna divisional headquarters on December 1 followed by Rangpur and Sylhet.
Deputy Commissioners (DCs), SPs, UNOs, metropolitan police commissioner, DIG of police of Barisal region, senior officials of BDR, Ansar and intelligence agencies and election-related officials of the division were present.
Home Adviser Major Gen (Retd) MA Matin, Cabinet Secretary M Abdul Aziz, Home Secretary Abdul Karim, UNOs, DCs, SPs and representatives of different forces were among others who attended the meeting.
Barisal Divisional Commissioner Mezbaul Alam made the address of welcome and conducted the meeting, where the CA noted that the geographical location of Barisal was different from other regions of the country as many voters live in backwater chars and islands.
"Anti-social elements and terrorists think char and island areas as their safe shelters," he said.
He asked for heightening intelligence vigilance so that absconding terrorists of this region could not create any kind of chaos (ahead of the polls).
He also asked the law-enforcing agencies concerned to remain alert so that runaway terrors could not enter the country with illegal arms and ammunition.
The CA said the main objective of the present caretaker government was to hold two elections-parliament and upazila parishad elections-in a free, fair and credible manner.
There are eight days to go before the general election and upazila elections are on January 22.
"The whole nation is now humming in campaign for general and upazila polls," he told the meet.
The Chief Adviser thanked the whole administration, the Election Commission and all concerned for carrying out relentless work to achieve the goal. Now the good ending of the journey of this government would take place through holding the election peacefully and keeping post-election situation peaceful, he said.
Fakhruddin forewarned that a little deviation or negligence could smash the achievements of the caretaker government in last two years.
