Take steps against anyone terrorising educational institutions: PM

Monday, 24 November 2014

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered ‘proper steps’ against anyone terrorising educational institutions irrespective of their political affiliation. She gave the instructions in a video conference on Monday with Sylhet Divisional Commissioner and Police Commissioner after the Cabinet meeting. ‘Recently there has been a problem at Shahjalal University; I want to know about it from the police commissioner. ‘I am instructing you to take action against those creating such problems or terrorising educational institutions irrespective of their political affiliation,’ she told the Sylhet police chief. Two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Sylhet’s Hazrat Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) fought a turf war on Thursday. BCL activist Suman Chandra Das, 22, died after being shot during the clash. SUST was closed sine die following clash and four cases were filed over the incident. At a media briefing the next day in Dhaka, BCL President Badiuzzaman Shohag claimed that outsiders, not BCL activist in SUST, were responsible for the clash. Speaking on the murder of a Rajshahi University teacher Prof AKM Shafiul Islam on Nov 17, the PM said these incidents can be 'controlled' if the perpetrators can be brought to book immediately. ‘We want you to take proper measures in this matter,’ she told the police officials, according to a news agency.
