Take steps to set up embassies of European countries in BD

Visa-seekers urge govt

FE REPORT | Saturday, 16 November 2024

Bangladeshi visa-seekers, aspiring to go Europe, have urged the government to take steps to set up embassies or consulate offices of the European countries (having job, education and other opportunities) in Bangladesh to avoid hassle and save foreign currency, as they have to go to the neighbouring countries for visa purpose.
They made the demand from a human-chain, organised in front of the National Press Club in the capital on Friday under the banner of 'European Visa Seekers' Unity Council'.
They said they have to go to New Delhi, India or Kathmandu, Nepal for getting visas of some important European countries having job and education opportunities, including Serbia, Croatia, etc, as the embassies or consulates of those countries are not located in Bangladesh. It compels them to spend a significant amount of foreign currencies and face various sufferings.
They noted that the Bangladeshi applicants, intending to go to some European countries, become victims of offload without valid reasons most of the time by the embassies or consulate offices of those countries in Kathmandu, Nepal.
They also said the Bangladeshi applicants have to wait for long in New Delhi for getting visa interview date from the embassies or consulates some European countries.
These problems could be solved, if the Chief Adviser, the foreign affairs adviser and others concerned take necessary steps.
"We humbly appeal to the Chief Adviser and the foreign affairs advisers, please take initiatives for setting up embassies or consulates of the European countries (having job and education opportunities) in Bangladesh," said Nafiza Islam Khan, a visa aspirant - intending to go Europe.
She called upon the government to initially set up at least VFS offices in Bangladesh, so that local people could submit their application files for obtaining visas.
She said migration, employment and educational opportunities are increasing in the European countries day by day.
Mehedi Hasan Ashik, member secretary of the unity council, and Sams Manna, its joint convener, were present in the programme, among others.
