Taking care of Mother Earth to combat natural calamities stressed

Economists, agriculturists and university teachers at a workshop in the city emphasised on taking care of Mother Earth by way of protecting environment to combat global worming, natural calamities and human sufferings. They asserted that economic globalisation is severely affecting human civilisation causing sufferings in every front across the world, reports UNB.
The economic factors evolved out of money-based economy are exerting tremendous impact multiplying human tragedy, they said at the 3-day workshop that concluded Wednesday.
The workshop on 'Economics and Education for Sustainability' was arranged by Department of Economics, IUBAT-International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, at its Conference Hall.
Prof Dr Robin Upton, eminent economist from Warwick University, UK in his presentation vehemently criticised the money-based economy saying people and life are more important than money.
Expressing apprehension, he said that in future the shortage of resources would create severe situation which money would not be able to salvage rather multiply more social crises leading to further human tragedy.
Keynote speaker Dr Mohammad Ataur Rahman, Director, Programme on Education for Sustainability and Faculty, College of Agricultural Sciences of IUBAT, detailed various aspects of education for sustainability.
He also said that climate change, Sidr, Aila and all natural calamities were the product of careless use of Mother Earth. "Present food crisis can only be solved by adopting Sustainable Agriculture. Awareness should be built up to mitigate manifest crises like, energy, water, waste management, biodiversity, food security, global warming and climate change."
