Taking notes while studying

M A Islam
JUST like taking note of teacher's lecture in the class is important, it is also necessary to take notes while one is studying on one's own. Notes taken while studying becomes helpful for one to remember and recollect what one has studied.
Teacher Anwar Islam has beautifully expressed the benefits of note taking while studying any subject. In his book Khibhabey bhalo chatro howa jay (How to be a good student), the writer has mentioned how a fisherman collects fishes by using nets. The fisherman throws the net into the water and takes the net back, then he collects and keeps the fishes in a different pot. If he does not take out the fishes to a pot and still keeps the fishes in the net, he cannot throw the net again into the water. A reader, after reading something has to take notes of what he or she has understood. A fisherman searches for fishes inside the net (or later) inside the pot. Similarly, a reader has to close the book and search for the required information inside the brain, and not inside the book.
Many students just copy the lines from the book, so in their notes there remain more unnecessary information than what is needed. In the way a fisherman keeps fishes in due order and in different groups inside the pot, similarly a reader/student needs to take notes and keep them separated according to the subjects.
Just like a fisherman does not keep his fishes in the net for long time, readers should not burden their minds with the gist of what is learned and should take notes in a proper manner so that they can focus on new lessons.
Students can take notes in their note books or also in the margins of the pages of the book. While using note books, they can take elaborate notes. The advantages of taking notes in the margin, to a limited extent of course because of space constraint, is you can associate better. For example, you may write some 3-5 words as a gist of an important paragraph. Next time when you will read the paragraph, your eyes will also go to the 3-5 words, and you will remember better what has been said in the paragraph.
Taking notes will help you connect your ideas--connecting ideas of one paragraph with another, of one chapter with another, and also of one course/book with another course/book.
When you are taking notes, you are actually actively working on the lesson. This active involvement with the help of which you can make something unusual will help you remember any lesson better.
Taking notes while studying will make your task of revision easier. You will read the notes and will be able to save your time while reading the text for the second, third of fourth time.
Taking notes will help you be original in expressing your ideas. You are writing on your own what you have understood and you can also put down your own appreciation/comments easily.
If you do not take notes, you might feel bored while reading a piece for long time. Taking notes can help you remove boredom. Also, you will enjoy reading the texts.
