Taking part in cholera vaccination campaign

Wednesday, 29 June 2022

Diarrhoea is a leading cause of mortality in children under 5 years along with its long-term impact on growth and cognitive development. Despite advances in the understanding of diarrhoeal disorders and management strategies, globally nearly 750,000 children die annually as a consequence of diarrhoea. In Bangladesh, generally, there are two outbreaks of diarrhoea that take place during April-May and August-September.The number of diarrhoeal patients in Dhaka from March-May this year was many times higher than in the past. More than half of these patients live in Dhaka city's Jatrabari, Dakshin Khan, Sabujbagh, Mohammadpur and Mirpur.
In light of the situation, the government hasrecently launcheda campaign for administering oral vaccines to prevent the spread of diarrhoea and cholera diseases across the country. Administering of first dose of cholera vaccine will reportedly continue till July 2.It is a welcome move, where everyone should participate. Besides, we should also emphasiseon other preventive approaches, such as the use of safe water, safe sanitation and personal hygiene.
