Tamim Iqbal attacks after Ian Bell century

Sunday, 6 June 2010

MANCHESTER, June 5 (AFP): Ian Bell scored his third century against Bangladesh but Tamim Iqbal led a spirited fightback as the Tigers refused to yield on the second day of the second Test here at Old Trafford.
Bangladesh were 96 without loss in reply to England's first innings 419, a deficit of 323, at tea on Saturday and now needed just 124 more runs to avoid the follow-on.
Tamim, who made a dashing century in England's eight-wicket win in the first of this two-Test series at Lord's, completed a fifty off just 43 balls in style by advancing to drive off-spinner Graeme Swann high over long-on for six.
At the interval, Tamim was 65 not out - having made five fifties in a row, all against England, in his last five Test innings.
Fellow left-hander Imrul Kayes, was unbeaten on 19 as England's attack, including debutant quick Ajmal Shahzad, went wicketless.
Earlier, Bell made 128 and wicketkeeper Matt Prior 93 as they shared an England record sixth-wicket stand of 153 against Bangladesh, surpassing the 143 Bell and Tim Bresnan put on at Mirpur in March.
England, 399 for seven at lunch, had their innings ended by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan's burst of three wickets for two runs in 13 balls.
The left-arm spinner finished with innings figures of five for 121 in 37.3 overs and, in the process, denied wicketkeeper Prior a third Test century.
Having gone for his shots throughout his innings Prior, the last of whose two Test tons, both against the West Indies, came in Port-of-Spain last year, saw a bold reverse sweep off Shakib go straight to Jahurul Islam at point.
In all, Prior faced 170 balls with nine boundaries and, with England still on 419, last man Steven Finn was lbw to Shakib for nought.
It seemed England would get through the morning session without losing a wicket until Bell was bowled by a fine ball from Shakib which pitched on middle and leg before turning past the outside edge.
Bell, in for five-and-a-half hours, faced 255 balls with a six and 12 fours, having come in when England were struggling at 83 for three.
England resumed on 275 for five with Bell 87 not out and Prior 21 not out.
There were no nervous 90s, however, for Bell - who now averages 158.25 against Bangladesh.
He lofted Shakib over the bowler's head for four and then off-drove him for another boundary to go to 97.
Bell's three off the back foot against left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak saw the 28-year-old Warwickshire right-hander to his 11th hundred in 56 Tests and third in five matches against Bangladesh.
Bangladesh 173 for 4 at 10.25pm.
