Tuesday, 15 September 2015
Tangail-4 parliament constituency, vacated by former telecoms minister Abdul Latif Siddique, will go to polls on 28 Oct. The Election Commission on Tuesday announced the by-polls schedule. Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said on Tuesday that the polls will take place on Oct 28. Filing of nomination will be possible until Sep 30. Scrutiny will be held on Oct 3 and the contestants will be allowed to withdraw until Oct 11. Siddique won the seat five times for Awami League before he was removed from the cabinet and the party last year for making controversial comments on the Hajj. Following his removal, the EC arranged a hearing to resolve the complication over his parliament membership. He moved the court against the hearing only to be turned down. Siddique attended the hearing on Aug 23 and said he would resign. On Sep 1, he attended the parliament session and tendered his resignation. Two days later, the seat was declared vacant. The former minister said he would not contest the by-polls. However, his brother Kader Siddique might contest from his party, the Krishhak Shramik Janata League, according to a news agency.
