Friday, 28 March 2014

The residents of Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) are all set to cast their votes in a by-election on Saturday to elect their representative to parliament. The polling will open at 8am and continue up to 4pm without any break. The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of AL MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan on January 20. “The Election Commission has taken all necessary preparations for the Tangail by-elections,” Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafiz told UNB. He hoped that the by-polls will be free and fair as election-friendly atmosphere prevails there. Five candidates are contesting the by-election to the parliamentary constituency. The MPs candidates are Shawkat Momen’s son Anupam Shahjahan of the ruling Awami League, Sadek Siddiqui of JP (Manju) and independent Abdul Malek (AL rebel) and Principal Abu Sayeed (AL rebel) and Liaqat Ali. The constituency has a total of 307,382 voters, including 145,576 men and 161,806 women, and they can exercise their franchise at 711 booths of 117 polling stations in the by-election.
