Tangail-8 MP Shawkat Momen Shahjahan dies

Awami League MP from Tangail-8 constituency Shawkat Momen Shahjahan died at Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex early Monday. He was 64. Shawkat Momen, also an agronomist and former president of the parliamentary committee on agricultural affairs, was declared dead at the health complex after he had been taken there around 5:45am, said Mokhlesur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sakhipur Police Station. Sources at the health complex said Shawkat had died of cardiac arrest before he was taken there. Shawkat is survived by one son, one daughter and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Shawkat and conveyed her deep sympathy to the bereaved family members. Shawkat was elected Member of Parliament (MP) as Awami League candidate four times from the same constituency – first in 1986 elections, then in 1999 by-election, in 2008 election and lastly uncontested in January 5 election this year. He was born in Gargobindapur village in Sakhipur in 1950, according to UNB.
