Tangail clinch Nations Cup Football crown

Tangail District Football Team clinched the Grameen Danone Nations Cup Football (10-12 age group) crown outplaying Jhalakati District team 3-0 in the final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Monday, reports UNB.
Shuvo Khan struck twice and Mishu Sheikh netted one for Tangail in the day's final.
Rabiul Hasan of Tangail was named the highest scorer of the tournament with five goals, Anik Ghosh of the same team named the best player while Thakurgaon was adjudged the most disciplined team to receive fair play trophy.
By virtue of the day's well merited result, Tangail District team earned the right to play in the 45-nation World Finals of the Danone Nations Cup Football in Johannesburg, South Africa to be held September 29-October 4 this year.
Khulna District team, the Bangladesh champions of Danone Nations Cup in 2009, has also been given the opportunity to represent the country this time, as they did not take part in the last year's World Finals in Brazil due to Swine Flue.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Youth and Sports Ministry Zahid Ahsan Russell was the chief guest in the day's final and later he distributed prizes.
Executive Director of Grameen Danone Foods (BD) Limited Corinne Bazina was the special guest at the function, also attended by BFF Vice-Presidents Badal Roy and Kazi Nabil, BFF General Secretary Mosabbir Saadi.
Earlier, Comilla finished 3rd in the tournament beating Thakurgaon by 4-3 goals in tie-breaker as the match was locked 1-1 during the regulation period.
Besides, Jessore beat Rajbari by 3-0 goals and Kushtia defeated Bogra by 3-2 goals in classification matches at the same venue Monday.
A total of 38 district teams, split into eight groups, took part in the first phase of the meet at the country's eight zonal venues - Gazipur, Brahmanbaria, Thakurgaon, Barisal, Rajbari, Meherpur, Bagerhat and Sirajganj.
Later, eight zonal champion teams played in the final round in Dhaka.
