Tangail flower cultivators making good profit

TANGAIL, Sept 26: Flower cultivation has been expanding in the district in the recent years due to high market demand.
Flower has become an important commercial product, as its use different way such as marriage ceremony, 21st February, national days, victory day and other socio-cultural function has increased gradually.
According to the local sources, most of the varieties of flower in our country are of the species India, Japan and China.
Among the commercially well known flowers are rose, marigold, tuberose, different species of orchid and, gladiola.
Traders' sources said at present roses and marigolds are the most important commercial items which have always equal demand in the markets, especially in the different national.
A number of farmers across the district have been cultivating varieties of flowers on commercial basis due to high profit. As a result flowers farm are expanding regularly in the district to meet the demand.
Sub-assistant agriculture officer of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, Shariful Islam said, "We are expecting a bumper production of roses, marigold, tuberoses, gladiola and some other varieties."
The flower venders said different type of roses are being sold Tk 10 to Tk 15 per pieces, tuberose Tk 5.0 to Tk 10 per stick, gladiola Tk 5.0 to Tk 10 per stick. Different kind of marigold, garlands and baskets are sold at Tk 100 to Tk 500.
Momota Begum of Beiltabari village under Sadar upazila of the district she grows flower on her 25 decimals of land.
She said rose, marigold and tuberoses are on the high demand.
Traders visit her garden every week and she sells flowers at wholesale rate.
"Flower farming is profitable. I earn around Tk 10,000 to Tk 15,000 by growing varieties of flower from 30 decimals of land", said cultivator Ahmed Ali.
