Police on Saturday night nabbed the suspected mastermind of the gruesome killing of a woman and her three daughters at Tangail’s Mirzapur Upazila. Jahangir Hossain was arrested from his house at South Sohagpur village at Mirzapur’s Gorai Union around 8:30pm, Mirzapur Police Station OC Abdur Rashid said on Sunday. The house of one expatriate Majibur Rahman at Sohagpara village went up in flames on the night of October 7. His wife Hasna Begum, 30, and three daughters – Monira Aktar Mariam, 14, Meem Aktar, 10, and Molly Aktar, 7, – were burnt to death in their sleep. Since then, police had been suspecting that Jahangir planned the arson. Jahangir, who is the son of victims’ neighbour Baharuddin, had been proposing to marry Majib’s eldest daughter Mariam for a while. Police suspect Jahangir had set the house on fire after the marriage proposal was rejected. Police confirmed that they were killed after recovering two containers of petrol from the scene. Jahangir and his family were on the run since then, according to a news agency.
