Tanners to start buying salt-treated rawhides tomorrow

FE REPORT | Friday, 21 June 2024

The country's tanners will start buying salt-treated rawhides tomorrow (Saturday) from merchants, as the procurement of rawhides of sacrificial animals has been completed, according to sources familiar with the development.
The tanneries have also directly purchased over 500,000 pieces of rawhide from seasonal traders, madrassas, and other sources.
Contacted, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) Shakawat Ullah told the FE that tanners have already started processing rawhides collected during Eid.
"Tanners are set to collect salt-treated rawhides from merchants across the country, including Dhaka, from Saturday," he said, adding that the government-fixed rates would apply to these purchases.
"The purchase and preparation of rawhides into wet-blue leather will continue for the next several months," he noted.
Responding to a query, he said the overall rawhide deals this year have been conducted in an orderly manner. "There have been no reports of rawhide smuggling, thanks to the vigilance of law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders," he noted.
Chairman of Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association Md Aftab Khan said that merchants in Posta, the largest rawhide trading hub in the capital city, have collected over 100,000 pieces of rawhide as per their target.
"The skin merchants are now ready to sell the salt-treated rawhides to the tanners within a couple of days," he mentioned.
On Wednesday, BTA Chairman Shaheen Ahmed said that more than 10 million animals were sacrificed in the country during this Eid, which would help tanners meet their target of collecting 8 million pieces of rawhide.
Regarding pricing, Ahmed suggested that the government should fix prices for rawhides without salt treatment to avoid confusion among seasonal sellers.
