Tareque, Arif placed on fresh 5-day remand

A court in Narayanganj on Friday placed former RAB officials Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Major Arif Hossain on a fresh five-day remand in connection with the Narayanganj 7-murder case. Senior Judicial Magistrate Shafiqul Islam passed the order when Detective Branch of Police Inspector Mamunur Rashid Mondal produced them before his court on the expiry of their second-phase eight-day remand with a seven-day remand prayer. Another former Rab officer, Lt Commander MM Rana, is now on second-phase eight-day remand in connection with the same case. Tareque who was the commanding officer of Rab-11 when the abductions and killings of seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC)’s panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker, took place on April 27. Tareque is the son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya. On May 17, police arrested Tareque and Arif from Dhaka Cantonment area for their alleged involvement in the gruesome killing, according to UNB.
