Sunday, 7 November 2010

FE Report
The government is taking an initiative to make the Tariff Commission (TC) as one of the strongest organisations of the country to protect trade and local industry, Commerce Minister Faruk Khan said Saturday.
In a bid to increase its dynamism, the minister suggested changing the name of TC to Trade and Tariff Commission which will function from December in its new form.
He was addressing a seminar on "Role of Tariff Commission in industrial and trade development of Bangladesh" as the chief guest at the Board Room of Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCIC).
In global context, Bangladesh is doing better as reflected in the recently published human index report, Khan said adding export of the country has increased than import.
The minister said new power connection has been resumed from November 1 following improvement on power supply with 1500 MW electricity added to national grid in last 22 months of the government.
He also said 1000 to 1200 MW more electricity will be added by June next year.
TC will be a research based organisation so that businessmen can solve their problems easily, otherwise it will lose its acceptability, he viewed.
He said consumer rights act has been passed and a department was formed in this regard.
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president AK Azad and TC chairman Dr Mohammad Mojibur Rahman spoke at the seminar as special guests.
Dr Mostafa Abid Khan, joint chief of TC, presented the keynote paper with BCIC out going President Shahedul Islam Helal in the chair.
FBCCI president blamed the politicians for their incapability and lack of prudence and undermining the country's development process.
He, however, identified corruption as the country's main problem.
The FBCCI chief suggested that meritorious and experts be brought back from abroad for accelerating country's economic growth and making the local industries the strongest one.
TC chairman Dr Mohammad Mojibur Rahman said the function of TC is to serve and protect local industries, but there is no role of TC in this regard due to withdrawal of its power in 1992.
Consumers are being deprived following ineffective role of TC, he observed.
He, however, blamed National Board of Revenue (NBR) and commerce ministry for this situation.
Newly elected BCIC president Waziullah and other office bearers of the association were present at the seminar.
