Tarique among 32 BNP-Jamaat men charged with Gazipur arson

Police on Tuesday pressed charges against 32 BNP-Jamaat men, including BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, in a case filed in connection with an arson attack in Gazipur. The Gazipur court fixed September 20 for hearing on the charge-sheet, said court Inspector Rabiul Islam. Tarique’s personal assistant Lutfor Rahman Badal and Manjurul Ahsan, son of suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, were among those named in the charge-sheet. Earlier in the day, police super of Gazipur Harunur Rashid held a press briefing at his office to brief reporters on the charge-sheet. The SP said miscreants set a bus afire by hurling petrol bomb at Manipur of Joydevpur on January 21 this year during the hartal and blockade programme enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance. Joydevpur police filed a case under the Special Powers Act in this regard. Eleven of the accused have so far been arrested in this connection. During investigation, police came to know that BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, his personal assistant Lutfor Rahman Badal and Manjurul Ahsan had held a meeting in London where they made a plot to carry out acts of sabotage in Gazipur district, the SP claimed. Tarique’s name has been included in the charge-sheet for ordering the BNP men to carry out violent activities and create anarchy across the country, he said. Besides, Tarique Rahman was found involved in financing acts of sabotage during the investigation, the SP added, according to UNB.
