Tarique\\\'s PS Opu denied bail

A court in the city Monday rejected the bail petition of accused Mian Nur Uddin Opu, personal secretary (PS) to BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, in a Tk 210 million bribery case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), reports UNB.
Passing the order, Judge Basudev Roy of Special Judge Court-3 sent the accused to jail.
Opu, PS to Tarique Rahman, now staying in London, appeared as one of the most powerful men at 'Hawa Bhaban', an alternative power centre during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.
After spending fugitive life in Malaysia for long seven years, Opu returned home on June 18 and surrendered before the designated court in connection with an extortion case and sought bail. Rejecting his bail prayer, the court sent him to jail.
The following day, police produced Opu before the court and shown him arrested in the Tk 21 crore bribery case filed against him and others with the Ramna Police Station.
On October 4, 2007, ACC deputy assistant director Abul Quasem filed a case against Opu and seven others for allegedly taking Tk 210 million in bribe to save Shafyat Sobhan Sanvir, son of Bashundhara Group chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam, from the charge of murdering Humayun Kabir Sabbir, a director of the group, on July 5, 2006.
The other accused are former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, Bashundhara Group chairman Shah Alam his two sons Shafayat Sobhan Sanvir and Sadaat Sobhan, Abu Sufian, BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman and Kazi Salimullah.
