Tax evasion cases against ex-mayors may be revived

Friday, 7 May 2010

FE Report
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is likely to revive two tax evasion cases against present and former mayors of Chittagong City Corporation.
The NBR has initiated the move as time for collecting due tax will expire on June 30 next.
The last caretaker government had filed two separate cases against ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin for concealment of information on wealth statement in their tax files.
The revenue board has made a move to realise the evaded tax from the two before expiry of five-year period for collection of due tax, said an official.
Under the exiting rule, taxmen can claim due taxes only for preceding five tax assessment years.
