Tax-free income ceiling should be Tk.275,000 annually

Sunday, 24 May 2015

It is nice to know that the government is considering to raise tax-free income ceiling from Tk.220,000 to Tk.250,000. But I think this is not enough and the ceiling should be increased to Tk.275,000 to offset inflation and increased cost of living. The middle class of the country has been particularly hard hit by spiralling commodity prices vis-à-vis rise in cost of living index. The salary of the government employees is going to increase by 100 per cent soon and it is sure to cause inflation leading to increased commodity prices. Particularly people who live in cities should get some respite as the cost of living in a city like Dhaka is higher compared to other small towns. The government should also exercise some control on house rent so that middle income people in Dhaka do not suffer more. The school authorities of Dhaka charge exuberant fees on different accounts which are adding extra burden on the parents who have school going children. The government should also increase its vigil against burgeoning corruption which is eating away the essence of the society and has emerged as a stumbling block for uninterrupted growth.
