Tax lawyers urge CA, advisers to submit wealth statements

Friday, 15 June 2007

Tax lawyers Thursday urged the advisers of the incumbent caretaker government, including the Chief Adviser (CA), to submit statements on their wealth to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for the sake of transparency, reports UNB.
Bangladesh Tax Lawyers Association (BTLA) and Dhaka Taxes Bar Association (DTBA) came up with the plea at a joint press conference, as the anti-graft watchdog, ACC, continued summoning people, especially politicians, to submit their wealth statements in the current drive, launched by the caretaker government, against corruption.
The BTLA and DTBA leaders said, "The Chief Adviser and advisers and other policymakers of the government, including top army officials, should submit their wealth statements to the ACC and make it public for the sake of transparency."
"We appreciate and support the caretaker government's ongoing anti-corruption driveā€¦ Even, we want to help the government move. But, for the sake of transparency, every adviser and member of the special taskforce should submit their wealth statements," said Suhrab Uddin, secretary of the DTBA.
The tax lawyers' organisations placed an 8-point demand to simplify the income-tax procedures and make the revenue-collection drive a success.
BTLA Secretary General Kamrul Alam Chowdhury read out their written statement. BTLA President Golam Sarwar and DTBA General Secretary Amin Ahmed Montu were, among others, present at the press conference.
The leaders urged the government to appoint a judge to the Taxes Appellate Tribunal and place the tribunal under the Law Ministry instead of Finance Ministry.
