Wednesday, 13 October 2010

The government has undertaken a plan to revise the existing taxicab policy to improve the public transport system, reports BSS
A meeting to this effect was held in the Ministry of Communications Tuesday where representatives of the concerned ministries, agencies and operators were present.
Under the plan, the Taxicab Policy of 1998 will be replaced with new one to put in place a modern taxi service for the citizens as like other Asian cities, said Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain at the meeting.
Secretary of the ministry Mozammel Huq Khan, officials of the ministries of finance, law, home and commerce and leaders of Bangladesh Association of Taxicab Operators attended the meeting.
Under the plan, the city will have highest 18,000 cars and microbuses including 9,253 air-conditioned and 8,747 non-air-conditioned vehicles.
The AC cabs will be of at least 2000 CC and non-AC cabs will be of at least 1250 CC. For the first time, microbuses of at least 2000 CC will be added to the fleets of taxicabs.
A company will have a fleet of at least 1,000 vehicles and their investment will not be less than Tk 250 million (2.50 crore), the new policy said, adding eligible companies would be selected through open tender.
Rent of air-conditioned cabs has been proposed at Tk 40 for the first two-kilometer journey and Tk 10 for every kilometer. Tk 2.50 will be charged for one-fourth of next kilometer or for its fraction.
For non-air-conditioned cabs, rent will be Tk 30 for the first two kilometers. Tk 8 will be charged for every subsequent kilometer and Tk 2 for one-fourth of next kilometer or for its part, according to the new policy.
