Sunday, 9 February 2014
Delwar Hossain, Managing Director of Tazreen Fashions Ltd, and his wife Mahmuda Akter, also the Chairman of the ready-made garment (RMG) factory, surrendered before a Dhaka court on Sunday seeking bail in a case over the devastating fire that killed 112 workers in Ashulia factory more than two years ago. They surrendered before Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam’s court at 9:30am as a lower court had earlier levelled them as fugitive and issued arrest warrant against them in the case. The judge is likely to hear the bail petitions later in the day. On December 22 last year, police pressed homicide charges against 13 people including Delwar and Mahmuda in the case. The accused were also charged with mischief by fire and causing grievous injuries and death by negligence. More than 112 garment workers, mostly women, were killed and scores wounded in the country’s worst industrial blaze at Tazreen Fashions in Savar’s Ashulia in the outskirts of Dhaka city on November 24 in 2012. A case was field in this connection on Nov 25, according to a news agency.
