FE REPORT
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has sought an allocation of 3.15 million tonnes of rice, which will be sold to 6.3 million smart card-holding families, for March as part of its month-long essential commodity-sale drive, sources said.
The rice will be sold at subsidised prices along with other key essential items, including edible oil, lentils, and sugar.
TCB has requested the commerce ministry to take necessary steps regarding the allocation.
The state-run agency sold key essentials to 10 million low-income families between March 2022 and December 2024.
In January and February this year, TCB did not sell rice. It wants to start selling rice next month.
Besides, the Directorate General of Food has been allocated 5kg rice per month for each family under the TCB's sales drive since July 2023. Each family can purchase the rice at Tk 30 per kg.
A commerce ministry official said, "We have requested the food directorate to take the next course of action regarding the allocation."
