State owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will soon start open market sale of edible oil, sugar and lentil to rein in soaring price of the three essential commodities, officials said Wednesday.
"We have asked the TCB to start OMS of the three items immediately to reduce the burden on common people," Commerce Secretary M Ghulam Hossain told the FE.
Necessary permission has been given to the TCB in this connection, he said.
TCB sources said it will sell one litre of edible oil at Tk 100 against the present market price of Tk 106 to Tk 109.
At present the TCB has stock of 4,078 tonnes of edible oil in its godowns and stores of different refinery mills which the government's market intervention arm bought at Tk 81 per litre.
Besides, the TCB has stock of more than 2,500 tonnes of lentil which it has planned to sell at Tk 77 per kg to retailers. At present lentil is being sold in the retail market between Tk 72 and Tk 104 depending on their origin and standard.
TCB bought these lentils at Tk 95 per kg during June-July period last year to intervene in the heated kitchen market in Ramzan.
It will also sell sugar in the market to help ease the price pressure on people. At present one kg of sugar in the retail market is selling at Tk 60.
Sources said the TCB will sell these items through its 2008 dealers across the country. Dealers will get commission of Tk 3 to Tk 4 per litre/kg, within 50 kilometres and over 50 km of the city corporation area respectively.
The TCB has plan to import 430,000 tonnes of different essential commodities in the current calendar year. At present nearly 34,000 tonnes of essential items of TCB are stored in government and rented warehouses.
Sources said recently the ministry of commerce has requested various government ministries and departments to provide godowns to TCB to store its imported goods.
Besides, the government has planned to build 40,000 square feet of godowns for TCB. Deputy commissioners in Rajshahi, Khulna and Rangpur have been asked to take necessary steps for land acquisition to build divisional offices and godowns for TCB.
