Tea association to raise salary of garden staff

Bangladeshiyo Cha Sangsad -- Bangladesh Tea Association (BTA) -- the only representative body of tea estates of the country, has accomplished a bi-lateral agreement with Bangladesh Tea Estate Staff Association (BTESA) in the city recently, says a press release.

As per the agreement, the basic salary scales of the members of the staff association including the drivers were increased by 25 per cent effective for two years from January 1, 2008. The basic salary scales of both the junior and senior drivers were also increased at the above rate.

Under the agreement, the members of the staff association and the monthly rated drivers were also given other monetary benefits. Further, the discrimination in the pay scales of Sylhet and Chittagong area gardens' staff was agreed to mend. The agreement reflected the cordial relationship of the tea association with the staff union.

Bangladesh Tea Association Chairman M Salman Ispahani, Senior Vice Chairman Mohammad Safwan Choudhury, Central Committee Member and Convener of Labour Sub-committee M Shah Alam and Central Committee members- Shafique A Choudhury, SK Anam, M Kamal and Kamran T Rahman, Sylhet Branch Chairman M Faruq Chowdhury, Chittagong Branch Chairman Kazi Arfan Ullah, BTESA President Mahbub Reza, General Secretary lqbal Chowdhury and the executive committee members were present at the agreement signing ceremony.

Both sides expressed the hope that the financial benefits as given in the agreement would help improve the overall development of the industry.
