RANGPUR, Aug 19: Tea cultivation is gaining popularity in the northern border belt of Lalmonirhat district as the Tea Board has already achieved tremendousness success in test cultivation of tea plant at different areas in the district, sources said.

Late freedom fighter Makbul Hossain cultivated tea plant in his one bigha of land with the assistance of the Tea Board beside his homestead at the village Sarpukur of Aditmari Upazila last year. He was taking good care of his garden but he died before he could harvest. After his death his wife Laila Bewa carried on with his unfinished work and looked after his tea garden.

In only a year, she has began to get harvest from the tea garden. Laila said that after two or three years her tea garden would become a successful garden and she will get more benefit from it. She also said if she could get loans from the government, banks or NGO's, she would cultivate tea on more lands. For cultivating tea plant on one bigha of land needs tk 35 to 30 thousands and sell the tea leaves at over Tk. 50 thousand per year, she added.

Another tea farmer Abul Kashem (45) said that he cultivated tea plant in his three bighas of land and achieved success. He also said that he did not take loans. If the authorities concerned provided loans he hoped to cultivate ten to twelve bighas more land for tea plant, he added.

Bangladesh Tea Board and Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) are jointly working in Lalmonirhat district for cultivating tea plant on a huge track of land in the district. RAKUB will provide loans and Tea Board will provide technical support to the farmers for cultivating tea plant, it is learnt.
