CHITTAGONG, June 04: Tea industry of the country has failed in achieving desired progress due to lack of proper development plan.
This was observed at a seminar on 'Strategic plan on uplift of tea industry' arranged by the Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB) for finalising the 12-year plan 'vision 2021' at its conference room in the city Monday.
Divisional Commissioner MAN Siddique, BTB Member (Research and Development) Md Abul Kashem, Member (Finance and Trade) Md Abdul Baset, acting secretary Md Habibur Rahman, Tea Research Institute Director Moinul Hoque, Project Development Unit acting director Harun ur Rashid Sarker and Bangladesh Tea Traders Association (BTTA) Chairman Shantanu Biswas addressed the seminar, among others.
While reviewing the International Tea Committee report for the year 2008, the speakers told the seminar that during last 10 years, production of tea exceeded 0.15 million tonnes in India, 4 million tonnes in China and almost double in Vietnam while Bangladesh was able to increase its production up to 12,000 tonnes only.
As there was no specific development plan on tea industry in Bangladesh, it could not achieve desired progress during the period.
The speakers said while the internal demand of tea is on the rise in the country, its production is not being increased. They expressed concern that if the trend continued, it would be difficult to export tea after meeting local consumption after 2020.
BTTA chairman, who is general manager of Ispahani Group, called for increasing production of tea for expansion of its market and devising strategic working plan for retaining quality standard of tea.
