There was a time when teachers were special class of the society. People of all levels used to respect them. People were assured after sending their wards to the teachers. Teachers had high degree of values in them. The incident of emperor Alamgir is relevant in this case. One day his son helped his teacher in preparing ablution. The emperor saw this. The teacher also saw that the emperor had noticed this. Then the teacher got panicked. When he was called to the palace, he, however, was prepared to talk to the emperor about the importance of a teacher to the student. When he went to the palace, the king instead of insulting him praised his work by mentioning that the teacher was teaching practical skills to the students. The emperor also mentioned that he would be happier if the son would rub the fingers of the leg of the teacher. This incident indicates the value of a teacher to the emperor in those days.
Today teachers are probably not that much valued in our society. Guardians do not respect them much, their kids also follow the same path. If the guardians do not respect them properly, how can we expect that their kids will honour the teachers? The young minds learn primarily from the environment of home. If home environment were in favour of respecting the teachers, young kids also would learn to respect them.
Also, teachers themselves have scope to improve their positions. They should remember that teaching is not just a profession, but it is also a mission. If they want to fulfill their mission---mission of helping others in education---they should develop themselves accordingly. Their continuous improvement of teaching will definitely make the students' dream to be like them.
If the teachers can become role model for the students, it will be easier for them to convince the students and motivate the students to study better. Their words will be more effective. Students will like the words of the teachers. They will be inspired to obey their teachers. The presence of the teachers will inspire them. They will be inspired to spend time with their teachers and learn from them. When teachers will be such inspiring figures for them, students will no more avoid their teachers, rather will feel like going to them again and again. The more the learners will be in touch with the teachers, the better they are expected to do in studies and in other creative works.
When teachers will be inspiring figures for the students, they can then play the role of counselors for them. Students can then discuss any of their personal issues with their teachers -issues such as financial hardship, love affair, misunderstanding with friends etc. Students in this way can good guidance from their teachers.
To sum up, when the teachers will be inspiring figures for the students, their works will be easier, students will become their friends and there will prevail very positive and friendly relationship between the students and the teachers. Both teachers and students will be benefited.
