Teasel gourd cultivation expanding in Rangpur due to low cost

RANGPUR, July 03: A good yield of teasel gourd (kakrol) has made the growers across the district jubilant during the current season.
They are also making good profit from the sale of their produce this year, sources informed.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur, sources said, the farmers of Mithapukur, Gangachara Taraganj, Kawnia, Pirgachha and other upazilas in the district are expecting to produce huge quantity of vegetables this year including teasel gourd as they prefer cultivating vegetables to many other crops.
Use of modern technology and quick compost has enhanced the production of vegetables significantly in recent years, sources further said.
"I have earned Tk 15,000 so far by growing teasel gourd on 22 decimals of land," said Atiar, a farmer of Boiriganj village under Mithapukur upazila.
Idris Mia, another farmer at Nabdiganj village under Pirgachha upazila said, he is very happy to witness a bumper production and good price of his produce.
This season he has earned Tk 14,000 so far by cultivating teasel gourd on his 25 decimal of land, he also said.
Talking to this correspondent a number of farmers said easy cultivation process, low production cost as well as satisfactory profit encourage the growers of the region to cultivate different varieties of vegetables including teasel gourd abundantly.
Ratan, a trader from Dhaka, said as fresh vegetable are available in markets of Rangpur district, he can purchase adequate amount of those at a reasonable rate.
Farmers urged the government to take necessary steps to build more cold storages in the region so that they can preserve huge quantities of vegetables.
According to DAE official sources farming of teasel gourd needs small quantity of fertiliser and pesticides.
The growers also use organic fertiliser and eco-friendly pheromone trap to cultivate the vegetable instead of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, sources added.
