The government is working for rapid expansion of technical and vocational education to transform the country's huge population into skilled human resources, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said.
"We have prioritised most of the technical education in the National Education Policy-2010 to turn our huge population into skilled human resources," the minister said, adding that technical education is the key mechanism to resolve the country's unemployment problem.
Mr Nahid said this while addressing a gathering on the Central Shaheed Minar premises in the city Saturday after attending a rally on the occasion of Technical and Vocational Education Week-2010.
Hundreds of teachers and students from different technical educational institutions in the city took part in the rally.
Education Secretary Syed Ataur Rahman and Technical Education Department Director General Prof Nitai Chandra Sutradhar also attended the function.
The education minister said the government is going to observe Technical and Vocational Education-2010 for the first time from June 20 to June 26 in the country in a bid to making people eager for technical and vocational education.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the week-long observance at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre today (Sunday) morning.
