Technical and professional schools are needed
Wednesday, 25 June 2008
THE Financial Express (FE) on June 16 reported quoting a senior official that receipts from overseas remittance was expected to reach US$10 billion in the next financial year following a robust growth in manpower export in the outgoing fiscal. Different newspapers reported about an on-going special drive to increase manpower export. The government has been lobbying other countries to engage Bangladeshi workers. It is trying to export manpower to other countries that are engaging manpower from other countries. More and more workers are going abroad on jobs to remit more to Bangladesh each year.
In this scenario, Bangladesh needs to invest resources for human resources development. Technical and professional training and education is the demand of time. Bangladesh has been spending a lot of resources for years together mainly on general and religious education at the secondary, higher secondary, under-graduate and post-graduate levels. Now we need to concentrate on education and training in technical and professional trades at the secondary and higher secondary levels.
To make the opportunities available in every region of the country, at least one driving training school should be set up in each district town. To train more people in divisional cities, four to six driving schools should be set up in each divisional city.
Besides, one nursing institute needs to be set up in each district.
Computer laboratories in each college and madrasa are needed to train the students in software and hardware to facilitate export of software from Bangladesh. And to shoot troubles in computers, hardwire technicians would be needed.
There is a large demand for motor-vehicle drivers all over the world. The western countries are facing an acute shortage of trained nurses and data entry operators.
Driving schools, nursing institutes, and computer laboratories need to be set up on an emergency basis to enhance the standard of living of the poor Bangladeshis. The government needs to allocate special funds and take programmes in this regard. Technical and professional training and education will facilitate the export of more trained manpower abroad. We have no time to lose.
When the poor will get opportunity to earn more, they would create demand for goods and services that will call for efforts to set up more industrial, commercial and trading ventures. The resultant cycle will create more employment. Increased economic growth would yield economic benefits to all Bangladeshis -- the rich, the middle class as well as the poor.
