BRAHMANBARIA, Apr 11: Ashuganj Power Station Company limited (APSCL) is in dire straits due to poor management in technical side. APSCL, the country's second biggest power station, is an enterprise of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). The government transformed it to a company in 2003, and appointed a managing director, two directors and other officials for better management. However, the steps brought no improvement, as APSCL's present production has gone lower than its expected production. Now APSCL is producing only 400-mw to 415-mw of electricity, whereas the production capacity of its eight units is 728-mw. Sources said, APSCL's current performance is very poor for callousness of its administration. On April 9 at 9am, electricity production of all units of APSCL's was closed due to technical glitches. So, people of Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj and adjacent areas did not get power for some hours, sources also said. Later, unit5-150mw, GT1- 56 mw, GT2- 56 mw and rental-55mw came back in production but rest of the three units did not run till now due to technical fault. So, the company could not supply sufficient electricity to the national grid, sources added. Load shedding has increased in Brahmanbaria severely. The shopkeepers do not close their shops at 8pm The students are not able to prepare their lessons owing to severe load shedding. The boiler mills, rice mills, saw mills, oil mills, chemical industry, laboratories and plastic, aluminum, biscuit factory and bakery are about to close down for load shedding. Ceaseless power outage has almost paralysed the normal life affecting the daily activities of people from all spheres and is causing huge losses to businessmen and production in mills and factories in the district. Local people have alleged that power goes off three to four times a day in the district town and ten to fifteen times in Upazila headquarters, even in many rural areas, electricity goes off for the whole day or night. Production in mills and factories declined and a good number of industrial units of BSCIC Shilpa area in the district are facing closure due to the erratic power supply. Local people urged the government to take necessary steps to run the power station properly to ensure regular power supply for boosting economic activities in the country's interest.
