Saturday, 16 August 2014

The water flow of Teesta River rose sharply due to downpour and onrush of hill water, inundating 40 villages in several Upazilas of Nilphamari and adjoining districts in the last 72 hours ending at 6am on Saturday. The inundation has left more than 2,000 families in the 40 villages of Dimla, Jaldhaka and two other upazilas stranded. However, the water flow of Teesta River has shown a downward trend as the river was flowing 23cm above the danger level on Thursday while it came down to 20cm on Friday evening and was flowing 8cm above the danger mark at 6am on Saturday. Sources at the Water Development Board, Dinajpur, said all the 44 sluice gates of Teesta Barrage have been kept open to cope with the situation, according to a news agency.
