Temp may rise during day but fall at night

Friday, 19 January 2024

Daytime temperatures are likely to rise, but nights will be colder, especially in parts of the capital, Khulna, and Barishal divisions, which had light-to-moderate rain on Thursday, report agencies.
A cold wave is sweeping across the entire country, particularly in Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Sylhet divisions, as reported by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The transportation sectors, including air travel, river transport, and road communication, may face disruptions due to foggy conditions.
The recent BMD bulletin states, "Rain or thundershowers are expected in several areas, with scattered showers likely in Khulna and Barishal divisions. Isolated rain or thundershowers may occur in Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Chattogram divisions. Other regions can expect mainly dry conditions with temporary partly cloudy skies."
The bulletin also warns of moderate to thick fog affecting many areas from midnight to morning.
In the weather forecast for Thursday, meteorologist Bazlur Rashid said that while the day's temperature was expected to remain unchanged, the mercury could rise by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius on Friday.
However, after a week of overcast skies, bright sunshine has finally pierced through the veil of dense fog cloaking Dhaka and other parts of the country.
By Thursday afternoon, the fog dissipated in the capital, revealing a clear sky and bringing a much needed respite from the biting cold.
Since Dec 11, the country has been shrouded by thick fog, intensifying the chill of winter.
The lowest temperature recorded over the past 24 hours starting Thursday morning was 8 degrees Celsius in Dinajpur, while Teknaf experienced the highest at 26.9 degrees Celsius.
In Dhaka, the minimum temperature was 12.8 degrees Celsius, and the maximum reached 18.2 degrees Celsius.
The Met Office also noted the possibility of rain or thunderstorms in parts of the Khulna and Barisal divisions, and a few places in the Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Chattogram divisions.
Moderate to dense fog is likely to cover parts of the country from midnight to morning, which may cause disruptions in air traffic, sea transport, and road communications.
Meanwhile, report from Manikganj adds: Ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route resumed after a six-hour suspension due to dense fog.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transportation Corporation's (BIWTC) Aricha terminal assistant manager Abdus Salam said they suspended the ferry services around 1 am after visibility was severely hampered because of dense fog.
Two ferries had to anchor mid-river while nine ferries at both Paturia and Daulatdia ghats remained stranded.
Over 300 vehicles, including buses, were waiting at both ghats to cross the river, he added.
Later, ferry services resumed around 9 am as fog started to dissipate.
