Tension rises as Joynal Hazari men reoccupy land

Sunday, 1 March 2009

FENI, Feb 28 (UNB): Former Awami League (AL) leader Joynal Hazari returned to his hometown Feni Friday and soon his musclemen reoccupied the land where once stood the Vendu Hazari Gymnasium, the den from where he reined as godfather.

The boundary walls of the land the administration had returned to the legal owners in mid 2001 were pulled down late Friday night.

Romana Ahmed, one of the land owners, said the administration was duly informed about the forcible action of Hazari's musclemen.

Supporters of Hazari said they would compel to rebuild the Gymnasium by those who had demolished it in the absence of their leader.

Returning home after about nine years of hideout in neighbouring India, Hazari surrendered to the High Court on February 22 and secured bail in one case with orders to appear before the trial court within two months when the law enforces should not harass him.

Hazari was awarded 60 years jail in absentia in five cases while 14 more criminal cases are still pending in the court.

His arrival in the town has raised panic among the residents. After meeting his mentally derailed mother Hazari visited a number of mazars and the tribal town of Khagrachhari.
