Tenure of five SCBs' chairmen extended

The government Wednesday extended the tenure of the incumbent chairmen of five state-controlled banks (SCBs) for the next two years. The directors of the banks concerned will be appointed within the next three to four days.
The banks are - Rupali Bank Ltd, Agrani Bank Ltd, Janata Bank Ltd, Basic Bank Ltd and Ansar-VDP Development Bank, said office orders of the Bank and Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance (MoF).
The separate office orders, signed by the Division's Deputy Secretary Rezwanul Huda, have been sent to the banks on the same day.
Another order extended the tenure of the Sonali Bank Ltd chairman, however, without mentioning any period. Officials concerned said there is possibility that the incumbent chairman of the bank might be changed any time.
The incumbent chairmen of the banks are: Kazi Baharul Islam (Sonali Bank Ltd), Khondoker Bazlul Haque (Agrani Bank Ltd), Dr. Abul Barkat (Janata Bank Ltd), Ahmed Al-Kabir (Rupali Bank Ltd), Sheikh Abdul Hai Bachchu (BASIC Bank Ltd), and Rear Admiral (retd) M A Taher (Ansar-VDP Bank).
In another two office orders, Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) chairman Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad has been re-appointed for another two years. Besides, Shanti Narayan Ghosh, a director of Bangladesh Development Bank Ltd (BDBL), has been appointed as its chairman for a period of two years.
The tenures of all the chairmen were scheduled to expire in different dates of the current month, starting from September 9. Their fresh appointments have been given with an effect from the following days after the expiry of their respective current tenures.
Finance Minister A M A Muhith, responding to a query, told the reporters that the boards of directors of the state-owned banks will be reconstituted within the next three to four days.
He, however, said some of the incumbent directors of these banks will remain in their posts for another term, while some will be changed.
