Two politically rival groups of terminal workers of Sadarghat clashed for supremacy over the river port in the capital Saturday afternoon, leaving at least ten injured, one critically, reports UNB.
Witnesses said the clash erupted when an ousted group of workers affiliated to the labour front of the main opposition BNP tried to retake the terminal at the business hub at about 3:00pm.
They were ousted from the 'ghat' by pro-Awami Sramik League activists led by its Sadarghat unit president Jalil after the Awami League-led grand alliance assumed power.
Some 30 workers, mostly belonging to the pro-BNP Sramik Dal, including its Sadarghat unit president Delwar, were evicted by the Sramik Leaguers after the December 29 general election, sources said.
Throwing brickbats, the rival porters chased each other during the rioting in the busy old Dhaka area, leaving at least 10 injured on both sides.
Among the injured, condition of Jalil (25) of the Jalil Group was stated "critical". He was rushed to the National Medical College Hospital.
Additional police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control at about 4:00pm.
The Kotwali police said Khokon, belonging to the Jalil group, and Selim and Nuru of the Delwar group were detained in connection with the clash.
