Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) is likely to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) for textile sector at Kumarkhali in Kushtia, said BSCIC chief.
BSCIC chairman Siddiqur Rahman told the FE that the project will be concluded within June 2013, and will be implemented under the BSCIC supervision in the annual development programme (ADP) after getting the nod of the Planning Commission.
"We are likely to set up a special economic zone to boost up the textile industry at Kumarkhali. It has been a renowned place for looms since the British colonial period and producing quality products for long."
"We will try to provide various facilities including a healthy environment to the textile craftsmen of the area, as they are facing a number of obstacles, and the textile units have turned into sick industries there."
He said, "This is an initiative to develop the socio-economic situation of the local craftsmen as well as to strengthen poverty alleviation process in the area."
The SEZ will be set up on 10 acres of land at Mouja-Udoy Bishnupur under Kumarkhali where at least 30 to 35 small and medium textile units are in operation. There are 7,053 craftsman families in the area, and around 21,000 people are directly involved with the sector. These people are operating 13,157 hand-looms and 605 electric-looms for their livelihood.
Under the project, infrastructural facilities, including new roads and culverts, power and water supply, drainage system etc, will be developed for the entrepreneurs.
He said, "The estimated cost of the project is Tk 81.6 million that would be entirely borne by the government. The new textile SEZ will create job opportunity for at least 2,000 people directly and for a number of others indirectly."
