CHITTAGONG, June 22: Thailand has expressed its keen interest to invest in the agro-based sectors in Chittagong considering its geographical location, port facilities and cultural affinity. Leader of the 29-member Thai-Bangladesh Business Council Leader Sangsak Limba Nyen said this at an exchange of views meeting with the directors of Chittagong trade body Chittagong Chamber and Commerce and Industry (CCCI) in the port city Wednesday. He said that he would request the highest authority in his country to re-introduce the Chittagong-Bangkok direct flight service as early as possible in view of its economic feasibility and growing interest from the businessmen in Chittagong. Team member and President of the council Mingpant Chayavichitsilp, two former presidents of CCCI Engr Ali Ahmed and Shafiur Rahman and directors were present on the occasion. President of CCCI Morshed Murad Ibrahim presided over the meeting. Welcoming the visiting team and mentioning the long lasting bilateral relationship Mr Ibrahim said the trade relation between the two countries needs to be further strengthened. He sought more investment from the Thai businessmen and said Chittagong traders will extend all-out cooperation to them. "Bangladesh has a cheap but efficient manpower which Thai businesses can utilise to boost up export," Mr Ibrahim said. He urged Thai high-tech industries to relocate their units of Bangladesh. Engr Ali Ahmed said Thai International Airlines once expressed interest to manage Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport. "They can do a good business from managing the port which is also expected to be approved by Bangladesh government if Thai Airlines comes forward with the proposal," he said. CCCI director Captain Shafi Chaudhuri and Shaheen Alam urged the Thai investors to come forward with proposal for infrastructure development like construction of highways and flyovers in Bangladesh under private-public partnership (PPP).
