Tuesday, 11 September 2007

FE Report
A number of Thai companies are keen to relocate textile and ceramic industries and invest in some other potential sectors in Bangladesh, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand in Dhaka said.
"We are also encouraging our business community to make investment in Bangladesh to help boost bilateral trade and narrow the bilateral trade imbalance," Suphat Chitranukroh, Thai ambassador to Bangladesh, said at a press conference in the city Monday, arranged to launch 'Thai Shoppe Ramadan Festival'.
K Habib Sattar, president of Bangladesh Thai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BTCCI), Kanyarat Vongskul, minister counsellor (commercial) of Royal Thai Embassy, and Jasim U Ahmed, trade adviser of Thailand for Chittagong were, among others, present at the press conference.
Mentioning Bangladesh as suitable for Thai investment, Chitranukroh said some Thai companies have already taken initiative to invest in the country seeing Bangladesh enjoying special incentives as a least developed country (LDC).
"…This festival is not only to sell products but also to establish a bridge between the businessmen of both countries," he added.
Answering a question, Thai ambassador said Thailand exported to Bangladesh products worth $500 million in fiscal 2006-07 when it imported products worth only $60-$67 million from the country.
The Thai ambassador called upon the local exporters to take part in more and more expositions in Thailand for promotion of market for Bangladeshi products.
Mentioning Thailand's experience in gas exploration, he said: "We would like to extend our support to the Patrobangla."
"We are also interested to develop express highway in the city," he said.
K Habib Sattar, president of the BTCCI, said the authorities concerned should extend all cooperation to efforts for marketing of the country's products abroad and let foreign investors know the facilities offered by the Bangladesh government for investment.
The BTCCI president expressed his dissatisfaction over indecision of the government about Thai investment proposals, saying such a situation may hamper future investment from that country.
However, 13 Bangladeshi and Thai companies will showcase and sell Thai products on the occasion of the Ramadan from September 14 to October 13 in the capital and at divisional and district towns.
Answering a question, Kanyarat Vongskul, minister counsellor (commercial) of Royal Thai Embassy, said the products that will be displayed are produced using 'halal' inputs.
